Review of I'd Rather Be Reading, or My Own Love Letter to Anne

I was a new mother, a handful of months into parenting. I was sleep deprived and a little lonely. I had succeeded in finding a good daily routine that involved a lineup of podcasts. (I've been a podcast listener since about 2010, so basically forever.) One podcast led me to a blog that led me to the 2013 Summer Reading Guide on the blog Modern Mrs. Darcy.

Making my way through that summer reading guide opened me up to the world of good contemporary literature. I came to the library and the bookstore more and more confident, solidifying my adult reader identity. I started a chapter in my own reading life that ironically involved blogs and the internet. For the first time in a long time, my reading life started to feel like a part of a community rather than something I just did alone.

For the longest time I referred to Anne Bogel as Modern Mrs. Darcy, and over the years as I read her blog faithfully and then devotedly downloaded her weekly podcast, I came to refer to her as Anne. Anne has been one of my favorite internet people for almost six years now, and she's one of my friends in that funny one-sided internet way.

Her new book, I'd Rather Be Reading, released yesterday, and I've been posting a lot about it over on my Instagram feed. This book is a delightful love letter to readers and lovers of books, a book for the bookish. This book makes me feel how the entire Modern Mrs. Darcy community makes me feel: understood.

And that's the thing about Anne and Modern Mrs. Darcy and her new collection of essays: reading isn't just about books. Reading is about community and experiencing stories together. So yes, I'd Rather Be Reading on the surface is a lovely, gift-able book about the delights and dilemmas of the reading life. And underneath that beautiful cover and those good-smelling pages is something even more important: connection, community, and celebration.

So thank you, Anne. Thank you for this community you've built where I can pull up a blog post, listen to a podcast, or read a book and say, "Me too!" Thank you to Anne and the team at Baker Books for sending me a free copy and including me in the launch team.

I'd Rather Be Reading is in bookstores now! Anne also has a book tour lined up this fall, so head to her events page to see if she's coming somewhere near you. I'll be driving up to Olympia, Washington, to her event at Browser's Bookstore. Let me know if you'll be there too!

I'm also giving away two copies of I'd Rather Be Reading (with exclusive stickers, bookmarks, and signed book plates) over on my Instagram account. Head there to enter (and leave a comment here for an extra entry)!
